unportable studios

The unportable studio means that is rather the instruments of the studio that are important than litterally the sound or music itself. The studio has many combination instruments, from oscilloscope to stimulators or from analog reel-to-reel players to strings… The unsound process is made during a short period (10 to 45 minutes), no particular training is required but just the spontaneity of gesture and engagement of sound-artist. Studio also means that the public representation is atrophied by the generic work of finding a sound to be expelled out of these machines. The unportable studio can be suitable to other parallel process like dance, music, singing, lecture and so on…

La chute - The fall : the end of the process is animated by a mechanical fall of sound, as in the first place I only focus on present / live recorded electronic frequencies and pulses until reaching an uncertain limit, kind of end of thread - end of conceptual improvisation - I start to seperate the elements, seperate the live from the recorded, in the mechanical process that will end the sound, that means that I actually seperate present from past or improvisation from composition… As an example, you take a rope and add weights to it, after a while the rope will break, this fall of weights means the fall of sound… Wether you start again or ou end the experience… Analog thiniking means that youy combine out-of-phase presents and start to seperate them, keepinf one present as reference (live sound process) and pushing the others towards the past (recorded sounds). The idea though is to keep times in the same space, I wouldn't push a sound towards a 700 m or 40 mn past (length of a reel), that would decorporate the times and therefore create a fake history. I rather have times in the same surface of perception making it possible to be aware of improvisation and composition, play with that…

Altough I've been playing those unportables since 2007 in many different situations and places, smallest studio as stones, pencils or anything playing in the head while climbing up the mountain top, I just started to enumerate them in september 2011.

Unportables are very dull on recordings and need to be cut in pieces before being toasted… But here just a glimpse to hear that nothing is really meant to be heard > the unportable studios
